Chapter Eighteen

Dev walked through the woods to meet Dredd. He hadn’t walked through the woods in ages, never needing to ever since he’d pretty much moved in with Sarah. It was still a bit light out, which had been part of his plan, getting there early to grab that advantage. He’d thought about inviting Mark as a buffer, but he hadn’t wanted to risk his old friend’s neck. This had to be just him and Dredd.

“Risky move.” The blond guy hallucination was back and as irritating as ever.

Dev sighed. “What the hell do you want?”

“I’m just offering friendly advice,” he said.

“Aye, right,” Dev muttered, wondering who the hell the guy really was. His bet was still on War.

“Facing off against a vampire? You’ve got a death wish, or you’re delusional.”

“I know what I’m doing.”

“I doubt that. He wasn’t looking to kill you tonight.”

“What?” Dev stopped, frowning. “What are you talking about?”

He had to be crazy to be listening to this guy. Still, he couldn’t seem to stop himself. Curiosity always did seem to get the better of him. If the guy had some insight into his old friend’s motivation for inviting him out tonight, he couldn’t pass up on it.

“Isn’t it obvious?” he asked with a grin.

Dev wanted to smack him. He doubted his hand would make contact with the creep’s face though so he fought the impulse. “Tell me, or get lost.”

“He just wants you to cheat on your girlfriend. So he can pick up the pieces later. But you knew that, right?”

Dev’s stomach clenched. He did know that, at least he’d suspected it going by the weird dreams and feelings he’d had since Dredd had asked him to meet. He had planned to use it to help him catch Dredd off guard.

“You did know. So then why are you planning on turning this into a suicide mission?”

“He needs to die.”

“Well, we all need to die sometime.”

“You’re fucking creepy, man, you know that?” He really hoped the guy didn’t turn out to be a figment of his imagination. He didn’t want to think he was that weird.

“There are much better ways to deal with this.”

“Oh, really?” He caught himself about to chew on his nails and stopped. Right now he could really use a joint.

The blond guy was smiling, all superior and cocky. “There are bodies in these woods. I’m sure Sarah’s Council would be very interested in knowing who put them there.”

The blood drained from Dev’s face, cooling him in spite of the still, warm night. The creep was talking about him going over Sarah’s head to have her ex killed by her Council. There was no way that was going to happen. If there really were bodies, he’d tell Sarah… Wait. Could he really do that? Realising she would have to kill Ray would be hell for her and he knew it. If it wouldn’t, she would have already dealt with him. He didn’t want to put her through that shit. Not right now. Not when she was pregnant and stressed out enough.
